“My Daughter Brought my Family Closer Together” An Interview with Abigail

Q: Why did you call the Pregnancy Care Centre?

“I just found out I was pregnant and I didn’t know what to do. It was so confusing for me. My family was telling me to have an abortion, but I didn’t know if I wanted to. My head was spinning. I needed help in sorting out what I wanted to do. I needed people to listen to me and help me understand my choices.”

Q: Why did you decide to go against those who were closest to you who wanted you to have an abortion?

“I was so emotional and needed a place to understand how I was feeling. When I was calmed down, I realized that I wanted to have this baby. My dad had recently died and I wondered how he would have reacted if I told him. I felt he would have wanted me to have the baby even if everyone else was against me. So, I listened to my heart and did what I thought was right, even though it was against what everyone else wanted for me.”

Q: What were some of the challenges that you had during your pregnancy?

“In my culture, it is so shameful to be pregnant and not married. Everyone was worried about the shame I would bring on the family and the honour of my deceased father. Because of that, my family kicked me out my home. I was so shocked. Everyone dropped me when I needed them the most.”

Q: How did the PCC help you at that time?

“The PCC was really helpful for me during this time. They helped me plan and think through the next steps. I had lots of decisions from housing and jobs to taking care of the baby. They helped me each step. They took time to listen to what I wanted and helped me sort out the pros & cons of each potential decision.  I knew I wasn’t alone – they were there to help me.”

Q: Now that your baby has come, how are things with the family?

“Everyone is very, very happy now. Everyone loves my daughter and does everything to protect her. She has definitely brought our family closer together.”
