Pregnancy made her an Entrepreneur

Claudia is a confident, gritty young woman. She owns a growing beauty business, is constantly improving her skills and somehow devotedly cares for her seven-year-old daughter Sophia in the middle of all that. She and her daughter recently returned to the PCC to reflect back on earlier days. You see, when we met Claudia seven years ago, she was between a rock and a hard place.
In Toronto on a visitor’s visa from Mexico, she had fallen in love with a man here. When she became pregnant, and her boyfriend backed out and said he wanted no part of it. Meanwhile Claudia’s family back home were unhappy with the relationship from the start, and were unwilling to support her if she returned. What could she do?
“I knew that if I was going to keep my baby, it wasn’t going to be easy but it was going to be worth it. And I knew that if I just had the abortion, it was going to be easier but it wasn’t going to be [easy] after… It was going to be like hell for me. I knew that wasn’t the right thing to do for me. I knew that I was able to raise a kid on my own – it’s just that I was scared.”
Searching for help, Claudia found the PCC. Her options were clearly laid out to her. Claudia eventually made the decision to keep her baby – she broke up with her boyfriend and started “a new life from scratch.” PCC connected her to midwives and many other resources. “Everything started here. When I came here, they provided all the help I needed,” Claudia recalls.
The pregnancy was a busy, difficult time. Claudia struggled with depression, but kept forging ahead. She started a home business in eyelash extensions to support herself and her coming baby. When Sophia arrived, Claudia went right on with her beauty business – her client on one side, and baby on the other.
And so things continued – Sophia grew, the business grew. Claudia’s parents grew to love their baby granddaughter. When Sophia turned two, her dad wanted to be a part of her life again.
Claudia made a difficult decision – fully knowing it was going to be tough, she chose to carry her pregnancy. But her eyes sparkle today as she talks about Sophia and the joy she is:
“Because of her everything changed and I feel like I had more responsibilities. I knew she didn’t have anybody else – just me – and I knew I had to give her the best of me… I had to make a lot of sacrifices for her – but it wasn’t bad, I was so happy to do that.”
