“I did not just want to have another baby that had that same condition [sickle cell disease]. It would be difficult juggling two kids with the same condition.”
Shakirah and her husband already had three kids when she found out she was unexpectedly pregnant. With her daughter already having sickle cell disease (SCD), Shakirah was fearful she’d be unable to care for another child who may or may not have the same health struggles.
Now, she is the proud parent of four kids, and her daughter with sickle cell disease is a happy helper in raising her son.
